EAAs Supplementation: Mitochondrial Function and Clinical Outcomes

Study:

Protein malnutrition is the main determinant of fraility and sarcopenia in elderly people. Specific EAA mixture may contribute to slow-down mitochondrial dysfunction and to ameliorate clinical status.

Design:

  • 155 elderly malnourished patients
  • randomised in 2 groups: EAAs and placebo supplementation
  • followed for 2 months

Measurements:

  • oxidative stress in plasma
  • mitochondrial production of ATP and cellular respiration in peripheral blood mononuclear cells.

Results:

nutritional status and general health

immune cell efficiency

cognitive performance

Mitochondrial ATP enhancement is associated with:

  • improvement in “Tinetti Scale” (fall risk scale)
  • improvement 4 metre
