EAAs or Dietary Proteins?

•In healthy elderly subjects the need for proteins is 1g/kg/day
•In elderly ill subjects the need is about 1,5g/kg/d (**)

1.5 g/kg daily protein intake may be difficult to reach in ill e lderly people: EAA or protein preparations may be useful

EAAs can’t be produced endogenously and this means they have to supplemented.

Plasma peak concentration is evident in 30 min (young) and 90 min (old) only after EAA supplementation.
